Greenhouse to Garden: Hardening Off Your Plants

Описание: Moving plants from the greenhouse to the garden isn’t as simple as setting them outside. In this video, I’m sharing how I transition my greenhouse plants for spring and why hardening off is essential to prevent transplant shock, sunburn, and stress.

If you’re starting seeds in a greenhouse, indoors, or under grow lights, this process helps your plants adjust to direct sunlight, wind, and fluctuating temperatures before planting day.

🌱 Step-by-Step Guide to Hardening Off Plants
Step 1: Start Slow
Place plants outside in a shaded, protected area for 1–2 hours on the first day. Avoid direct sunlight and strong wind.
Step 2: Gradually Increase Time Outdoors
Add 1–2 additional hours outside each day, keeping them mostly in filtered or indirect light at first.

Step 3: Introduce Morning Sunlight
After a few days, allow plants to receive gentle morning sun. Avoid harsh afternoon sun early in the process.

Step 4: Expose to Outdoor Conditions
Gradually introduce plants to light wind and normal temperature fluctuations so stems can strengthen.

Step 5: Monitor Moisture Closely
Plants will dry out faster outdoors. Check soil daily and water as needed.

Step 6: Leave Out Longer
By days 7–10, plants should be able to tolerate full sun (if sun-loving crops) and stay outside most of the day.

Step 7: Ready to Plant
Once plants can handle a full day of sun and overnight temperatures are safe for your crop, they’re ready for transplanting into the garden.

Hardening off typically takes 7–10 days, depending on weather and plant type.

Whether you're growing vegetables, herbs, or flowers, taking the time to harden off your seedlings will lead to stronger plants and better spring growth.
