The role of a Crime Analyst in South Africa: Navigating challenges and finding solutions through best practices.
The Minister of Police in South Africa – Min Bheki Cele – released the National Reported Crime Statistics for the second quarter (1 July to 30) of 2022/2023, late last year. During this time period of three months, 7004 murders were committed, averaging 76 murders per day. Reported rape cases totalled 10590 for this same period. Organised Crime infiltrated South Africa on almost every level, controlling industries and extortion of often vulnerable communities.
Proactive policing seems like an impossible task, with statistics like these. The ultimate goal is to utilise Crime Analysts’ best practices to reduce crime rates by networking with policing partners, Governmental Departments, academia as well as other international policing colleagues. It is necessary to create a network of trust, including people with the specialist expertise, to assist with guiding an analyst to produce products aimed at assisting Policing Agencies in the fight against crime.
We will explore how crucial the role of Crime Analysis is South Africa is, considering the current context and multiple variables influencing crime rates in our country.
