Missoula mom warns of AI kidnapping scam that faked daughter’s voice

Описание: A Missoula mother says she spent the longest 15 minutes of her life believing her adult daughter in Helena was being held at gunpoint, after a scammer used what sounded like her daughter’s real voice and spoofed her phone number in a frightening ransom call on Jan. 21.

The caller threatened to kill and sexually assault the woman’s daughter if she didn’t follow his demands and send money, she said in an interview with NBC Montana.


Kris Sampson, a Missoula local, said she was working from home when her phone rang and her daughter’s contact appeared. With it came the personalized ring tone, color scheme and photo that always appear when her daughter calls. Sampson said she answered to hear her daughter sobbing. Hysterical crying that Sampson was certain was her child’s voice.

“There’s no doubt it was her voice,” she said. “So immediately, I think you go into a parent fear response."

Moments later, Sampson said, a man came on the line, first sounding friendly and asking if she was her daughter’s mom. Then, she said, everything took a turn. The man began screaming, cursing and threatening to “put a bullet in her head” if Sampson didn’t do exactly what he said. He told her not to call back or involve law enforcement, warning that if he saw calls from police or from her number to her daughter’s phone, “she’s done,” Sampson said.
