European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union is moving to deepen sanctions on Iran in an effort to weaken Tehran’s leadership, condemning the regime’s response to nationwide unrest as “abhorrent.” Speaking Thursday, von der Leyen said existing sanctions are already “biting” and contributing to pressure for political change, as thousands are reported killed during protests. She voiced full political support for Iranian demonstrators, calling them “bravely fighting for change,” and pledged the EU would publicly identify those responsible for atrocities against civilians.
