STEEL STRIKE!
As talks between Union and Steel Industry leaders in New York come to a hopeless deadlock, the mills bank their fires and half a million across the nation go out on strike. Federal mediation efforts fail to break the deadlock, and in related industries, the effects of the strike begin to be felt, with thousands of other workers in forced idleness.

NUCLEAR SHIP LAUNCHED: In Quincy, Massachusetts, the U.S.S. LONG BEACH, America's first nuclear surface ship, is launched by the wife of California Congressman Hosmer. The vessel, which will be armed with the latest guided missiles, is toured by Admiral Rickover.

BASTILLE DAY: France recalls days of glory on the Anniversary of the French Revolution's storming of the Bastille with flashing, glittering observances rich in military splendor, one of the most gala observances in the history of the nation.

NEWSREEL MEN TO RUSSIA: Thanks to the U.S.-Soviet cultural exchange program, an American Newsreel Unit leaves New York City for the U.S.S.R. where they'll cover the opening of the American Exposition in Moscow and Vice-President Richard Nixon's tour of the Soviet - for American movie screens.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY

HUEY LONG of Louisiana made headlines with his 'war' against the City Administration of New Orleans. National Guardsmen mustered against the city's corps of special deputy police.

F.D.R. toured the mid-West, returning from a Hawaii vacation, as large parts of the agricultural heartland were ravaged by searing DROUGHT.

ON THE FASHION SCENE: They staged a lavish FUR SHOW. 1934's most chic - with the temperature topping 90 in the shade....
