Описание: Today's Republic of Armenia is considered the first country in which Christianity became the state religion. Armenians identify strongly with the Christian faith. The external expression of this are churches and monasteries, which from the 10th century not only became religious, but also spiritual, cultural and sometimes political centers in Armenia. The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are among the most important buildings in the country. Both were founded after 960 by Queen Khosrowanush, who had them built “for the well-being” of her sons Gurgen and Smbat. The two monasteries are separated by the massive Debed Gorge. It is spanned by a 19 meter long bridge, a technical feat from the 12th century and the oldest secular architectural monument in Armenia.

The Haghpat Monastery was a fortified monastery that towered above the town of the same name and was visible from afar. Embedded in the mountain landscape, the complex looks as if it is growing up from the earth. The oldest sacred building is the Holy Cross Church, also called the “Church of the Holy Sign”. Its external façade, decorated with austere ornaments, signs and writings, is crowned by a depiction of the two sons of the royal monastery founder. Sanahin is considered the most perfect monastery complex in Armenia. Legend has it that an important clergyman gave the monastery complex the name: San-a-hin, which means “that is older” – older than Haghpat. The center of the monastery is the library.
Although inconspicuous on the outside, the interior is unique: the columns are all designed differently and are dedicated to theology, philosophy, the arts and mathematics - the sciences that were taught there.

UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Mankind" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” shows these places in impressive images.
