My name is Amy Wise. I'm a colorectal surgeon, and I do that because I enjoy taking care of people with complex diseases and doing abdominal surgeries. So colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, and it can be detected early by getting screening colonoscopies at the appropriate intervals. So that's what we recommend is that people do their screening tests to identify cancers early if they're able to, and then my role in that comes in once a cancer has been detected to treat that cancer surgically, if that's one of the options for it. And then I also treat benign colorectal diseases as well. I think that taking care of someone in a way that makes them feel comfortable starts in the clinic if possible. Obviously, there are people that we meet for the first time in the hospital, but I want to get to know you at an office appointment and discuss your care before we're in the situation where you're going to have a surgery.

And then when you arrive for your day of surgery, I want you to know that you are getting a procedure that you understand from a doctor that you trust that we've discussed all of your questions, and that you're ready to go forward. A lot of what we do in colorectal surgery has to do with cancers of the colon and rectum, and so people come to that with a lot of fear and concern, but it is a highly treatable disease. Cure is very much possible for many people, and you're going to work with a whole team when you have that disease. You'll see a colorectal surgeon, a medical oncologist, sometimes you'll see a radiation oncologist, and all of those people are going to be communicating with each other to try to give you the best care possible, to give you your best chance of having a good outcome from this disease. I am from Memphis, Tennessee. I originally moved to Louisville to do my general surgery residency here, and I went to my undergraduate at Auburn University and then to the University of Tennessee Medical School and to U of L for my residency.

Amy K. Wise, M.D., is a colorectal surgeon with Norton Surgical Specialists. Dr. Wise earned her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Kentucky, and a fellowship in colon/rectal surgery at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa.

Dr. Wise has experience and special interests in all facets of benign and malignant colorectal disease, as well as anorectal disease and pelvic floor disorders. Her philosophy of care is to provide excellent clinical care in an environment that supports patients and allows them to feel cared for and well informed.
