A loyal and indispensable servant of the crown, Siward gave crucial military support and political counsel to Cnut’s successors, Harthacnut and Edward the Confessor. His power and reputation were further enhanced by his campaign against the Scottish king Macbeth, a conflict that later secured him a place in the dramatic imagination of William Shakespeare.
