A Mohiniyattam Expression of Longing
In this soulful Mohiniyattam performance, Ramya Shankaran brings to life the poignant Swathi Thirunal kriti “Aliveni Endhu Cheiyu”, a deeply emotional composition rendered in Raga Kurinji, known for its tender, yearning quality.
The piece portrays a lovelorn heroine speaking to Lord Padmanabha, expressing her anguish, confusion, and abandonment. Her words—“Aliveni, endhu cheiyu?” (“Beloved, what should I do?”)—are steeped in viraha bhava, the pain of separation. Through gentle, undulating movements, intricate mukhajabhinaya (facial expression), and Mohiniyattam’s signature swaying grace, Ramya embodies the inner turbulence masked by outer stillness.
This performance goes beyond romantic lament—it becomes a spiritual metaphor, reflecting the soul’s yearning for union with the divine. The restrained yet emotive choreography highlights the delicate dichotomy of stillness and stir, a hallmark of the Mohiniyattam tradition.
Ramya’s interpretation offers a deeply introspective experience, allowing the audience to feel not only the heroine’s longing, but also the universal emotions of love, loss, and surrender. Aliveni Endhu Cheiyu, in her hands, is not just a performance—it is an offering of vulnerability, devotion, and timeless feminine voice.
