Russian missile strike kills 7 people in Mykolaiv
A Russian S-300 missile strike overnight killed seven people in Mykolaiv, a city about 68 kilometers (42 miles) from Kherson's regional capital, the Ukrainian President's office said Friday morning.
The missile destroyed a five-story residential building and rescue crews were sifting through the rubble in search of survivors.
Serhii Serebriakov, a Mykolaiv resident, said he heard an explosion around 3:30 am (0130 GMT).
"People were sleeping and not bothering anyone," he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry didn't acknowledge striking a residential building in Mykolaiv, saying only that an ammunition depot was destroyed “in the area of the city.”
The president's office said Russian drones, rockets and heavy artillery strikes across eight regions killed at least 14 civilians between Thursday morning and Friday morning.
Mykolaiv mayor fears intensified Russian shelling
With Ukrainian gains in the Kherson region, Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych warned that the shelling of his city could intensify.
"The more Russia loses, the more it lowers its terrorism bar," he said, recalling Friday morning's shelling of Mykolaiv, where seven people were killed.
Mykolaiv has been extensively shelled since the first day of Russia's invasion.
The city is mostly attacked from within the wider Kherson region, and Sienkevych thinks that Russia's retreat from the city of Kherson will not cause a significant shift for Mykolaiv, where civilians often become a target.
Sienkevych said that the city remains within the radius of the S-300 missiles, which he says can hit targets in the city a mere minute after they launch, leaving too little time to warn people.
Russia and Ukraine carry out prisoner swap
Several Ukrainian service members returned to their home country on Friday as a part of a prisoner swap with Russia.
The swap saw Kyiv return 45 service members and the bodies of two dead soldiers.
Details of the swap were given by the Ukrainian Presidential Office on Friday.
According to the office's head Andriy Yermak, who also leads prisoner exchange relations with Russia, among those returned to Ukraine are soldiers and sargeants who took part in active combat.
Video and images shared by the Ukrainian official show men in military gear and civilian clothing arriving in a truck and greeting their own.
News of the swap comes as Russian troops appeared to have given up control of the southern city of Kherson, a major turning point in the war.
Satellite snaps damaged bridge, dam near Kherson
Satellite images released on Friday showed damaged key infrastructure near the Ukrainian city of Kherson where Russia has just released its foothold.
The aerial photographs from Maxar Technologies show damage to both the Antonovskiy Bridge and the Nova Kakhovka dam which cross the Dnieper River on the south side of the regional capital.
Moscow confirmed Friday thousands of its troops had completed their withdrawal across to the eastern bank of the river.
The pullback came six weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin illegally annexed the Kherson region and three other Ukrainian provinces, vowing they would remain Russian forever.
The satellite images showed damage to both the northern and southern ends of the span of the Antonovskiy Bridge.
Russian media reports suggested the bridge was blown up following the Russian withdrawal; pro-Kremlin reporters posted footage of the bridge missing a large section.
