The "dirty" mix effect: Distortion is a nonlinear effect. When applied to a master track, it distorts not only the voice, but also all the instruments that are playing at the same time. The drums lose their clarity ("punch"), and the bass begins to clash with the vocals, creating a mess in the mid-range frequencies.
Intermodulation: Loud low-frequency elements (kick, bass) will modulate the distortion effect on the voice. At the moment of the kick, the voice may "fall through" or acquire an unpleasant crackling that is beyond control.
Loss of text clarity: Distortion inherently compresses dynamics and adds harmonics. On a finished track, this results in consonants blending with instruments, making words unintelligible.
Amplification of background noise and artifacts: If the mix contains reverb or subtle noises, distortion will increase their level, making the track noisy and less professional.
It's funny, but some of this can also be played in the opposite direction, resulting in useful dirt. We're looking forward to the double tracks on YouTube)
