After a failed run chase in the first ODI against Sri Lanka England find themselves in a do-or-die situation once again in the 50-over format. Their recent record in ODIs has been below par and the visitors have their backs against the wall as they take on Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday (January 24).

In the series opener Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat. Openers Kamil Mishara and Pathum Nissanka got starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. Kusal Mendis was the star of the show remaining unbeaten on 93 on a testing surface. Dhananjaya de Silva and captain Charith Asalanka fell cheaply but all-rounder Janith Liyanage added 88 runs for the fifth wicket alongside Mendis before falling four runs short of a half-century.

Dunith Wellalage then played a late cameo smashing an unbeaten 25 off just 12 balls to take Sri Lanka to 271/6 in their 50 overs. Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for England finishing with figures of 3 for 44 from his full quota of 10 overs. Sam Curran Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed chipped in with a wicket apiece.

In reply Zak Crawley was dismissed by Asitha Fernando in the third over. Ben Duckett and Joe Root steadied the chase and put England ahead with a 117-run partnership for the second wicket both batters bringing up their respective half-centuries. At one stage the visitors looked in control at 129/2 after 27 overs.

However in the next 12 overs and two balls England lost five wickets while adding just 36 runs. The pitch slowed considerably and began assisting spin making life difficult for the English batters who thrive when the ball comes onto the bat. Jacob Bethell (15) Harry Brook (6) Jos Buttler (19) and Sam Curran (5) were all dismissed in quick succession.

Rehan Ahmed (27) and Jamie Overton (34) offered late resistance with a 39-run stand for the final wicket but Madushan dismissed Overton to bowl England out for 252 with four balls remaining. Pramod Madushan bagged three for 39 from his 5.2 overs. Dunith Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay picked up two wickets each while Asitha Fernando Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka chipped in with a wicket each. Can England bounce back to stay alive in the series?
