Sky News can reveal doctors and health executives have discussed closing the emergency department at one of Greater Darwin’s two public hospitals.
Northern Australia correspondent Matt Cunningham says the territory’s hospital system is up to 20 per cent short of its full quota of full-time employees which is putting a massive strain on the hospital system.
The possibility of closing the Palmerston Regional Hospital emergency department was among the options discussed earlier this month, according to several independent sources familiar with the meeting.
Another option raised was to significantly scale back emergency department services at the hospital, with just a handful of beds to be made available for walk-in patients, and ambulances directed to go straight to Royal Darwin Hospital.
