Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the newly built Naranpura Sports Complex, a world-class multi-sport facility in Ahmedabad, on Sunday. The project, developed at a cost of ₹823.52 crore, aims to position the city as a hub for international sporting events.
Shah, during his day-long visit to Gujarat, will also attend the 5th Akhil Bharatiya Rajbhasha Sammelan at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, participate in Hindi Day celebrations, and inaugurate a new girls’ hostel at Sardardham, near Vaishnodevi Circle. Later, he will chair a review meeting on ongoing development projects in his Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency.
A Sports Infrastructure Landmark
Location & Scale: Spread over 82,507 sq. m (21 acres) with a built-up area of 1.18 lakh sq. m, the complex was conceptualized by the Sports Authority of Gujarat with guidance from the state and central governments.
Foundation Stone: Laid by Amit Shah on May 29, 2022.
Global Events: Approved to host the Asian Aquatics Championships and World Weightlifting Championships. Designed keeping in mind India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.
Major Facilities
1. Aquatics Centre
Olympic-standard swimming pool (51.5m x 25m x 3m) and diving pool.
Seating for 1,500 spectators (meets international norms, short of Olympic capacity).
Built with Myrtha Pool Technology for eco-friendly, earthquake-resistant, and leak-proof design.
2. Centre for Sports Excellence
Two large halls for basketball, volleyball, badminton, taekwondo, kabaddi, wrestling, and table tennis.
Includes sports science & fitness centre, medical unit, athlete accommodation, and equipment rooms.
3. Indoor Multi-Sports Arena
Largest block with facilities for Olympic-level events.
16 badminton courts, 4 basketball courts, 4 volleyball courts, gymnastics mats.
Seating capacity: 5,200, with VIP lounges, media rooms, doping control, and warm-up zones.
4. Community Sports Centre
Membership-based access for citizens.
6 badminton courts, 6 table tennis areas, squash courts, indoor shooting range, chess, carrom, billiards, snooker, gym, aerobics, and library.
Seating for 300 spectators.
5. Fit India Zone
Open to the public.
Yoga lawn, jogging track, outdoor gym, skating rink, children’s play area, senior citizen seating.
6. Outdoor Sports Arena
6 tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, warm-up swimming pool (FINA standards).
Parking
Space for 850 two-wheelers and 800 four-wheelers, ensuring smooth accessibility.
International Attention
The complex has been inspected by delegations from the Commonwealth Games, World Police & Fire Games, and the Australian Sports Excellence Forum, who endorsed its readiness for global competitions. Officials confirm that all facilities comply with international federation guidelines.
Strategic Importance
India’s Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games: The complex will be a central venue if Ahmedabad secures hosting rights.
Long-Term Goal: Strengthening Ahmedabad’s case as a contender for the 2036 Olympics.
Local Impact: Alongside elite competitions, the facility will provide citizens with access to professional-grade infrastructure, promoting fitness and community sports.
