mahmudur rahman is a Bangladeshi engineer and businessman. he is also one of the owners of my country magazine who was arrested by the government while serving as the acting editor of the newspaper.

rahman has been a strong critic of the government through his newspapers since the restoration of the civilian government in 2008 and the victory of the awami league. party and government officials reacted by accusing them of defamation and sedition cases more than 50 times from 2009 to 2013. he is the only person sentenced to contempt by the Bangladesh supreme court.

early life
mahmudur rahman was born in comilla on july 6, 1953. in 1977, he completed his honors in chemical engineering from Bangladesh university of engineering. he received a diploma in ceramic engineering from japan in 1986 while working in engineering in japan. then, in 1988, he did his mba on business administration from the business administration institute of Dhaka university.

career (business)
mahmudur started his career as an operations engineer at the british oxygen company, a british gas company in britain. he has since served in important positions in munnu ceramic, dakan brothers, bexico group, padma textiles. he has also worked with a reputation in japan.

mahmudur returned to bangladesh in 1998 and in 1999 he formed a company called artisan ceramic limited. this was the country's first technical "break throw" and chinese sister factory in ceramic. he sold artisans in 2013.

career (politics)
When bnp formed the government in 2001, mahmudur was elected chairman of the national investment board in 2002. [8] He introduced the Theory of Pachan I ("five 'I' s") to increase foreign investment in Bangladesh. His notable work is to bring in foreign investment for Meghna Energy Limited, Kachanpur. Bangladesh's foreign investment increased from USD 52 million to USD 121 million from 2002 to 2003; Which is the highest in South Asia. According to the 2004 UN report, Bangladesh's foreign investment was USD 460 million.

on august 21, 2004, 20 people were killed and 300 more injured in a grenade attack on a rally in the then opposition awamig; as a result, the antigovernmental strike continued. Mahmudur criticized both sides, saying political violence and unrest are a threat to foreign investment, and government security should be provided for it. in December 2004, he submitted his resignation to prime minister khaleda zia in protest against political unrest. but when the prime minister refused, he ended two years of his contract with the investment board.

mahmudur rahman has been the acting editor of amardesh since 2008.

arrest
on thursday, april 11, 2013, he was arrested from the office of amar desh magazine in kaoran bazar and taken to the db office. mahmudur rahman is accused of hurting the religious sentiments of the common man by collecting bloggers from the internet and publishing it daily in my country magazine.
