Since their widespread introduction into the UK land drilling market, accidents and injuries involving s-sized
wireline drilling systems (for 146mm boreholes and 102mm core) have persisted. The overshot mechanism within
the system is designed for vertical application. Due to the overall weight of the s-sized system, the latches that
attach the overshot to the barrel can become detached when moving the system from vertical to horizontal, and
vice versa. This detachment can and has led to reportable injuries to drilling operatives, as the barrel becomes
detached and falls. In addition, accidents have been reported when operatives have used their fingers to
decompress the latches and remove the overshot from the barrel. Because of these known issues, wireline system
manufacturers provide safety devices for s-sized systems to prevent this detachment and remove operatives’ hands
from the danger area when decompressing the latches, thus eliminating associated risks.
Wireline systems, including the large diameter systems such as the s-size, use an integral drill and case system.
There are many system types on the market and new ones being introduced or updated, changed and improved
from time to time. No matter the system being used, the correct use of equipment as per manufacturers design
applies. If you are unsure whether safety devices are required for your wireline system, please consult your system
manufacturer.
While many systems available on the market may appear similar in design and seemingly interchangeable at first
glance, it is critically important not to mix components from different manufacturers. Despite superficial
similarities, these systems often have subtle but significant differences in dimensions, tolerances, and functionality.
