On 27 February 1881, Boer commandos turned Majuba Hill into the “Hill of Humiliation”, shattering British pride in one of the most crushing defeats of the First Anglo-Boer War. In this documentary-style video, we break down how Major-General George Pomeroy Colley led his 400-strong British force onto the summit, only to be outmanoeuvred and outshot by Boer marksmen climbing the slopes below.
You will see how the Boers used cover, close-range rifle fire and the broken ground of Majuba to pick off redcoats, overwhelm key positions like Gordon’s Knoll, and trigger a chaotic British collapse down the hillside. The disaster at Majuba forced London to negotiate, leading to Transvaal self-government and effectively ending the First Anglo-Boer War.
If you enjoy Anglo-Boer War battles like Laing’s Nek, Bronkhorstspruit and Schuinshoogte, detailed battlefield analysis, and stories of empire, resistance and strategy, this video is for you.
