🌿 Episode 03 Summary

After the divine wedding of Shri Ram and Sita, the elderly King Dasharatha expresses his long-held wish to crown Ram as the crown prince of Ayodhya. The entire Kosala assembly and the people wholeheartedly support this joyous decision. Ayodhya is filled with celebration, and even Kaikeyi, Ram’s stepmother, is delighted.

However, on the eve of Ram’s coronation, Kaikeyi’s maidservant Manthara, driven by jealousy and malice, manipulates Kaikeyi into demanding the two boons granted to her by Dasharatha long ago. Influenced by Manthara’s poisonous words, Kaikeyi demands:

1️⃣ Ram’s exile for 14 years
2️⃣ Bharat to be crowned as the king

Bound by his promise, the grief-stricken Dasharatha reluctantly agrees, though his heart breaks at the thought of parting with Ram. When Ram learns of his father’s helplessness, he accepts the decree with grace, devotion and absolute obedience—hallmarks of his divine character.

Though Ram insists that Sita and Lakshman stay in Ayodhya, both firmly choose to accompany him into exile. Ayodhya plunges into sorrow as the three depart for the forest.

Overwhelmed by grief, Dasharatha soon passes away. Meanwhile, Bharat, who was away at his maternal uncle’s kingdom, returns, shocked by his mother’s actions. Refusing the throne gained through injustice, he sets out to bring Ram back. But Shri Ram, devoted to dharma, refuses to return before completing the 14-year exile. Bharata returns to Ayodhya and vows to rule as Ram’s representative, placing Ram’s padukas on the throne.

This episode captures one of the most emotional and pivotal turning points of the epic.
