The Story Behind "O Holy Night"

Imagine France in the year 1847. A local priest asks a wine merchant and part-time poet named Placide Cappeau to write a Christmas poem. Cappeau, who wasn't a particularly religious man, pens the powerful verses of "Minuit, chrétiens" (Midnight, Christians) while traveling on a stagecoach.

Feeling the weight of his own words, Cappeau decides the poem needs music. He approaches his friend, Adolphe Adam, a celebrated composer. Here’s the first twist: Adam was Jewish. Sailors at sea, who usually heard only the staccato of Morse code, were stunned to hear a human voice and a violin singing of a "Holy Night."
