O Holy Night
Oh, holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn'
Fall on your knees, oh, hear the angels' voices
Oh, night.. divine..
oh, night.. when Christ was born
Oh, night.. divine..
oh, night.. oh night divine
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn'
Fall on your knees, oh, hear the angels' voices
Oh, night.. divine..
oh, night.. when Christ was born
Oh, night.. divine..
oh, night.. oh night divine

The Story Behind "O Holy Night"
Imagine France in the year 1847. A local priest asks a wine merchant and part-time poet named Placide Cappeau to write a Christmas poem. Cappeau, who wasn't a particularly religious man, pens the powerful verses of "Minuit, chrétiens" (Midnight, Christians) while traveling on a stagecoach.
Feeling the weight of his own words, Cappeau decides the poem needs music. He approaches his friend, Adolphe Adam, a celebrated composer. Here’s the first twist: Adam was Jewish. Despite the difference in faith, Adam was moved by the lyrics and composed a soaring, operatic melody that we still struggle to hit the high notes of today.
The song was an instant hit among the French people. But then came the controversy. The church leadership in France eventually banned the song! Why? They discovered it was written by a man who had left the church to join a socialist movement (Cappeau) and composed by a Jew (Adam). They claimed the music was "lacking in spirit" and too operatic for a "holy" setting.
But you can’t stop a song the people love. Across the ocean in America, an abolitionist named John Sullivan Dwight heard the hymn. He was moved by the third verse: "Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother, and in His name all oppression shall cease." Dwight translated it into English, and it became a powerful anthem for the anti-slavery movement during the Civil War.
The legend of the song grew even more on Christmas Eve, 1906. Reginald Fessenden, a former chemist for Thomas Edison, did something no one thought possible. He spoke into a microphone and played "O Holy Night" on his violin. It was the first time music was ever broadcast over the radio. Sailors at sea, who usually heard only the staccato of Morse code, were stunned to hear a human voice and a violin singing of a "Holy Night."
From a banned poem to a radio pioneer, "O Holy Night" remains a testament that hope and light can come from the most unexpected places.
