The Banwari Trace Archaeological Site is located in southwest Trinidad, on the southern edge of the Oropuche Lagoon, and is one of the most significant sites to Caribbean prehistory. It is an archaeological site dated about 5,000 B.C. or 7,000 B.P. which makes it the oldest pre-Columbian site in the West Indies. The site provides rich insights into the life of one of the earliest settlers in the Caribbean, our indigenous peoples. Banwari site has yielded artifacts made of stone, shell and bone, and human remains of Trinidad’s oldest peoples.

The remains of a human skeleton, lying on its left-hand side, in a typical crouched burial position, was found at the site. The skeleton is preserved and is currently housed at the Zoology Museum of the University of the West Indies and is very much available for future research.
