Visitors exploring Alder Lake in the Balsam Lake State Forest Preserve section of the Catskill Mountains will find the ruins of the 1901 Coykendall estate, a once three-story structure which was demolished by the state in 2008.
Paddlers will also find a beautiful 45 acre impoundment lake created by the Coykendall family in the early 1900's.
This small, shallow lake affords excellent brook trout fishing as well as gorgeous scenic views of the Mountains of the Balsam Lake Preserve.
Several designated primative camping sites are available on a first-come-first-serve basis all around the lake, with a 1.5 mile loop trail affording access to them all.
