Jan Ullrich, who missed the Tour de France 1999, considered the "Vuelta" only as preparation for the World Championships at Verona. Taking over the lead after stage 12, he managed to defend the yellow jersey successfully in the last climbing stage on absolutly horrible streets and without team-support against all spanish attacks. In my view one of Jan Ullrichs greatest efforts although he crushed his opponents two days later in the final time-trial.
