Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest living martial arts traditions in the world, originating in Kerala, India. It is deeply rooted in Indian culture, Ayurveda, yoga, and temple traditions.
The word comes from “Kalari” (training ground or battlefield) and “Payattu” (fight or practice). Traditionally practiced by warriors to defend kingdoms and villages. Flourished between the 9th–13th centuries, especially under the Chera rulers. Holistic martial art, which combines physical combat, discipline, medicine, and spirituality. Training happens in a sunken earthen arena (Kalari), symbolizing humility and connection to the earth. Students begin training at a young age under a Gurukul(master).
Styles of Kalaripayattu: Northern Style is more combat-oriented emphasizes weapons, agility, and jumps. Southern Style focuses on hand-to-hand combat and pressure-point techniques (Marma).
Training stages involve body conditioning, flexibility, animal postures, Wooden weapons (staff, stick),Metal weapons (sword, shield, spear). Masters are trained in Marma Chikitsa (vital-point healing). The same knowledge used to injure is also used to heal.
Modern Relevance: Builds strength, flexibility, focus, and discipline. Recognized as an important part of India’s intangible cultural heritage.
