A melody and feel reminiscent of Oasis's Wonderwall and other 90s Indie-Pop-Rock, Helicopter is a great entry piece combining single line melodies and chords. The original tempo for the piece is 95 BPM but I've decided to bring it down to 70 BPM to be able to practise accurately and iron out any mistakes.
Beginners may find the chord shapes starting on bar 9 are the most challenging parts of the song. The hardest thing when you start chord playing is gaining the ability to change chords quick enough. There's no solution except one thing - practice!
As I mention in the indroduction of the video, the notes in the melody cover four strings from the 4th (D) string to the 1st (E) string. It's really important when starting to play scales and melodies that you spread your fingers out so each finger can cover its own fret: So the index finger will cover any note on fret 1, the middle finger will cover any note on fret 2 and the ring finger will cover any note on fret 3.
If you put your left and in the air and make a star shape, you can see how much your fingers can spread out. Relax your hand and fingers. But remember, your fingers will not initially spread as effectively when your fingers are bent to play notes on the fretboard. It takes practice and gradual muscle training for your fingers to effortlessly distribute themselves evenly across the fretboard.
