In the latest video from Buteyko Clinic International, founder and Director of Education and Training, Patrick McKeown guides Buteyko client Ruth through the light breathing exercise.
This simple nose breathing exercise is usually practiced for four minutes with the control pause taken before and after. It improves gaseous exchange by introducing light, soft and slow breathing that creates an ‘air hunger’. This helps us reduce our sensitivity to carbon dioxide and boost oxygen uptake in the blood (Bohr Effect).
This is a great exercise for asthma. It is often the first exercise used with an asthmatic when they begin the Buteyko Breathing Method program. When doing this exercise, remain relaxed. The air hunger should be tolerable. If it becomes too difficult, take a break for 30 seconds and try again.
Those following the Buteyko Breathing Program usually see a 50% reduction in symptoms after two weeks.
