Myths & Legends of Bengal – The Tale of Behula and Lakhindar
Long ago, in the ancient land of Champaknagar in Bengal, there lived a wealthy merchant named Chand Sadagar. Proud and devoted to the god Shiva, Chand refused to worship the goddess Manasa, the snake deity. Angered by his defiance, Manasa vowed revenge.Years passed, and Chand's son, Lakhindar, grew into a handsome and noble young man. He married the beautiful and courageous Behula. But the night of their wedding, tragedy struck. As foretold by Manasa's curse, a venomous snake slithered into the bridal chamber and bit Lakhindar, taking his life before dawn.Grief-stricken yet determined, Behula refused to accept her husband's fate. She placed Lakhindar's lifeless body on a raft and set sail down the mighty Ganges River. Days turned into weeks as she journeyed through forests, storms, and lands ruled by gods and spirits. Her unwavering devotion and unbreakable will moved even the cruelest hearts. At last, Behula reached the realm of the gods. Her tears and prayers reached Manasa herself. Impressed by Behula’s bravery and love, the goddess agreed to lift the curse — but only if Chand Sadagar agreed to worship her.Reluctantly, Chand gave in. With the curse broken, Lakhindar returned to life. Behula and Lakhindar were reunited, and their tale became a symbol of love’s triumph over death. To this day, in the villages of Bengal, the story of Behula sails through time — a legend of faith, courage, and the power of devotion.
