New Jersey City University's Department of Educational Technology and New Jersey Maker's Day are partnering to help learning communities make their spaces more accessible for all people. By taking everyday objects or common electronic toys and items and adding buttons, switches, and pedals so they can be used by people with limited motor skills, students can help improve the educational experiences of people in their learning community. Often an accessible version of a toy or device will be several times more expensive than the original, and many times there will not even be an accessible option.
The K-12 STEM Design Challenge is a statewide competition that aims to foster creativity, innovation, and critical thinking among students by designing for accessibility. The challenge is open to all public K-12 schools and encourages students to use STEM principles to design and build a solution to real-world problems of providing greater accessibility for all in our teaching and learning spaces.
