Just like the Cincinnati Zoo's preemie hippo, Fiona, Calvin Underwood had a rough start in life. He was born early with multiple medical problems.

And just like Fiona, a special care team cared for Calvin the first few months of his life.

Darci Clark, RN: "He loved to be held, I remember holding him and calming him and just he loved to be up close."

Calvin was adopted by his foster family and is now a happy thriving 4-year-old, with loving parents and an older sister.

Although he comes back often for care at Cincinnati Children's, he made a special visit to reunite with a nurses who first held him, and he went to see Fiona, his favorite zoo baby.

Brittney Underwood, mom: "It's always kind of emotional for me when I see the people that took care of him before I even met him. We kind of refer to the nurses in the NICU as his first moms."

The small window Cincinnati Children's nurses had to care for Calvin at the start of his life is what his forever family says is one of their greatest gifts. And for the nurses, it's a gift that is given back.

Ashley Simon, RN: "Taking care of these babies here, I always look at it as when they are in my care I treat them like my kids, like how I would want my kids to be treated if they were here. It's not all just medicine and it's not all just an assessment. It's what compassion do you give to that person? Because that's another human being.”

Calvin's mom: “if he didn't have that he probably wouldn't be so lovey and snuggly and happy.”

Nurse: “I think that's what makes it so rewarding for me. And then to meet you years later and see you meet you and what the difference is made in your life and in his life and hearing him laugh and smile and be so happy and know that he's doing so well, that is like the most rewarding thing that you have being a nurse here.”

Mom: “Thank you."
Nurse: "You're welcome."
