Hardboard might be an ugly, soft, and cheap material made from compressed wood fibers—hardly something you’d want to bring home to mom. But when it comes to template making, it's the superhero you didn’t know you needed.
Why? Because it’s tough, easy to machine, and can be shaped to your exact specifications in no time. You can quickly mill it with a bandsaw or even a coping saw, and then sand it down to the final dimensions with sanders or files. If you need to drill holes later, just mark them with a small hole and press them out with an awl when you're ready.
Here’s where the magic happens: grab a roll of double-sided adhesive, like cheap carpet tape. Stick your pattern onto the workpiece, press it down, and it’s ready to go. Cut close to the edges on the bandsaw, then head to the router table to finish things up with a pattern or flush cut bit.
The beauty of these templates is that they let you create the exact shape you’re looking for, with clean, straight edges—something that’s nearly impossible to do by hand. And the bonus? You can stack several pieces together, saving you of time in the end.
