The organ was built in Germany by E.F. Walcker & Company of Ludwigsburg and installed in the Boston Music Hall in 1863. It was the first concert pipe organ in the U.S.
The organ contained roughly 6,088 pipes and 84 registers upon installation and was later expanded to approx. 116 ranks.
In 1884, it was removed from Boston Music Hall and remained in storage until Edward Francis Searles purchased it in 1897. In 1909, it was reinstalled by Methuen Organ Company (Treat) with electropneumatic action. Then in 1947 it was rebuilt by Aeolian‑Skinner (Opus 1103), modernizing console and tonal structure. In 1961–63 Andover Organ Co. added a Great reed chorus, updated voicing. Finally in 2020–2024 it was re-regulated under Frederick A. MacArthur with Craig Seaman, Daniel R. Kingman, Jonathan Ortloff, and Jonathan Ambrosino.
