John French Sloan: Urban Realist and Ashcan School Founder
John French Sloan (1871–1951) was an influential American painter and a founding member of the Ashcan School of American art. Born in Lock Haven, Sloan is celebrated for his urban genre scenes that vividly capture the essence of life in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. Beginning his career in Philadelphia as a cashier and illustrator, Sloan honed his painting and sketching skills independently. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz and was greatly influenced by his close friend Robert Henri, who guided his move toward realism. In 1904, Sloan moved to New York City, where he created many of his most famous works while relying on freelance illustration for income. A member of the Socialist Party since 1910, he contributed politically charged illustrations to various periodicals and served as the art editor of The Masses. Sloan also taught at the Art Students League in New York and spent summers in Santa Fe, supporting Native American artists and drawing inspiration from the local landscape. Celebrated for his sympathetic portrayals of everyday urban life, Sloan's paintings are housed in major American museums. Discover the life and legacy of John French Sloan in this video.
