Ryuko Matoi is the main protagonist in the Kill la Kill anime and manga. She is a nomadic transfer student who transfers to Honnōji Academy in search of the other half of a red Scissor Blade she carries, and the one who murdered her father, "Isshin Matoi" (real name: Sōichirō Kiryūin).

She learned that she is a Life Fiber and Human hybrid as her mother is revealed to be the Honnōji Academy's director, Ragyō Kiryūin as well as the younger sister of Satsuki Kiryūin whom they thought she died after a failed experiment. However, her father faked his death and changed his appearance and disguised himself as "Isshin Matoi" and raised her and kept a secret from her in order for her experiment Life Fiber to be a success.
