That’s right — in this episode of Two Brits Try, we’re diving into one of the most iconic combos in U.S. history: grilled cheese and tomato soup. Brits try America's Classic Tomato soup and Grilled Cheese for the first time.

But of course, we didn’t make it easy on ourselves…

One of us went gourmet — making homemade sourdough bread from scratch (yes, even the starter, which took over 14 days to develop), using fancy cheeses, and crafting a rich, roasted tomato soup from scratch.

The other? Well… he grabbed sliced white bread, plastic-wrapped American cheese, and a can of soup from the store. So the question is: can time, effort, and premium ingredients really beat quick, cheap, and classic?

And tomato soup? That’s usually Heinz, straight from the tin.

But in the U.S., this combo is nostalgic, beloved, and deeply comforting — and we totally get why now.

As two Brits living in America, we’re always curious to explore the foods people here grew up with. And grilled cheese + tomato soup? It might be simple, but it’s seriously satisfying.

Back home in the UK, sourdough is something you might find in a fancy café or trendy brunch spot. But here in America? It’s a full-blown obsession — and a serious culinary rite of passage. So naturally, we had to give it a go. No shortcuts. No sourdough kits. No cheating.
We followed Joshua Weissman’s famous sourdough recipe step-by-step — including making the starter from scratch, feeding it every single day for over two weeks, and then finally (hopefully) baking the perfect loaf.
This video is more than just a recipe — it’s a journey. We’re two Brits living in America, and this was our first time EVER making sourdough. Did it go smoothly? Absolutely not. Was it worth it? Watch and decide for yourself…
