On May 17, 2025, the BIONICLE Community changed forever. With a never before seen act by The LEGO Group, at the advice of their lawyers, the Company we all have loved since our childhood, has stepped out to cancel a highly anticipated fan game. While it's not something that is overtly surprising, as countless other fan-created games have met the same fate, it still disappoints the BIONICLE community as The LEGO Group is a company that pushes creativity and self-ownership of the product to the nth degree. Regardless, it's still fascinating to discuss as the Team Kanohi, now renamed Unmasked Games, still has minimal clarity as to why these actions took place at this very moment, only speculation.

Today, I'll be overviewing the history of Team Kanohi's BIONICLE: Masks of Power video game creation, all the way back to 2015, while also dissecting the official cancellation 10 years later, in 2025. My speculations as to why The LEGO Group could have cancelled the project range from copyright protection to the extreme of new BIONICLE product coming in the future. However, no certainty can be asserted as we have no official statement from The LEGO Group.
