by setting my horizontal 2X4's flat it eliminated the 4 x 4 post from sticking out of one side and made setting pickets quickandeasy.....
however, what I realized with the typical 3.5" gap between pickets, there was just too much view into the neighbors yard. so, I changed the gap to 2.5",
problem solved!
