As you pass through the village of Mattur in Karnataka, you’ll hear Vedic chants coming from inside every house. You'll see children in the streets wearing dhotis and sporting traditional hair tufts (tiki) on their heads. Everyone speaks to each other in Sanskrit. Located on the banks of the Tunga River, Mattur still has traditional Gurukuls, where teachers (gurus) and students (shishyas) follow the ancient method of learning. Hearing all this or watching videos about it might make you think this village is backward. But that’s not true at all. Mattur is equipped with all the modern facilities of today’s world.
