Mirjan Fort Known for its triumphant history and architectural elegance, Mirjan Fort is one of the best places to visit in Karnataka. Located around 22 kilometres from Gokarna, this 16-century fort boasts of cultural glory and distinguished history. However, the origin of the fort has not one but many different versions. According to the most popular version, the fort was constructed by Chennai Bhairavi Devi, the Queen of Geroppa, also known as the ‘Queen of Pepper.’

The Agnanishi River fringes the Mirjan Fort amidst natural surroundings. The fort is a renowned architectural marvel with high ceilings and bastions. It has four main entrances along with moats, secret passageways, and canals, providing a royal reminder of our vibrant history. You can approach the fort through wide steps made of laterite stone. Built over an area of 10 acres, it has witnessed several battles yet withstood the test of time. The fort also has several watchtowers, offering a birds-eye view of the surrounding areas. Due to its remarkable history, Mirjan Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region.

While you can visit this old-age heritage site throughout the year, the months between September to February are considered ideal. During this time, you can experience pleasant showers that make the atmosphere even more pristine and extraordinary. The surrounding area gets engulfed with a lush green cover and colourful blooms. You can also find several grasslands within the fort premises. When covered by greenish algae during or after the monsoon season, it looks like a fort straight out of a movie.

Tucked away in nature’s arms on the coastal belt, Mirjan Fort is an ideal place for a perfect weekend getaway. Once a busy port, this tranquil and extravagant fort is worth a visit. Its convenient location on National Highway 66 makes it easier for tourists to commute in and around the region. You can book a taxi or hop on the bus to reach the marvellous Mirjan Fort. It is open all seven days from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

How to reach: Located in Uttara Kannada District, Mirjan Fort is just 56 km away from Murudeshwar, 59 km from Karwar, 31 km from Honavar, 22 km from Gokarna and only 11 km away from Kumta. The fort is easily reachable by road and one can hire a cab from any of the above cities.
