I'm playing through a Fender 65 Twin Reverb Reissue set with a neutral clean tone. Sorry I dropped the ball by not playing the clean sound first on all of the comparisons but I did remember on the last one which is at 01:43

I did this comparison because I'm exploring 'amp' type overdrive pedals at the moment and trying to find a favourite. I've been impressed with the Boss OD-3 so far so I decided to put it against the more modern Origin Effects Revival Drive Compact which is highly regarded as an 'amp in a box' type overdrive pedal that responds in a very similar way to a cranked valve amp and generally designed to be played into a clean amp.

The Boss OD-3 was released way back in 1997 while the Revival Drive was only released in 2019. I wanted to see whether the difference between them represented a significant improvement in sound of overdrive pedals over that period that claim the to respond in a similar way to a good tube amp.

I didn't experience a massive improvement in sound, it more felt like a different flavour with the ability for fine tuning being the main appeal of the Revival Drive. The main thing I did notice though was that the top end is a little easier to get along with on Revival Drive and doesn't get harsh as easily. However when stacked with another gain pedal like a fuzz, it seems to lack high end. In hindsight in might be to do with the EQ switch on the Revival Drive which if set to EQ2 would probably behave in a more open manner similar to the OD-3.

If you want a simple affordable classic overdrive pedal that has a smooth amp like response and can be battery powered, I recommend the OD-3.
If you want the ability to really fine tune your sound for something more specific and you’ve got some cash then go for the Revival Drive.
