In this investigation, I’m examining a shift that appears across many regions after the early 1700s: architecture becomes simpler. Ornamentation declines. Stonework grows thinner. Structural ambition gives way to repetition and efficiency. Buildings are still constructed—but they no longer attempt the same scale, precision, or complexity seen before.
Earlier structures often feature oversized foundations, intricate masonry, and design choices that seem unconcerned with cost or speed. After the 1700s, those traits largely disappear. Records describe progress and modernization, yet the physical evidence suggests a narrowing of architectural capability rather than an expansion of it.
This isn’t an argument about decline or intent. It’s a comparison between what was once built and what followed.
Something changes after the catastrophe—not just in style, but in what architecture is willing, or able, to attempt. I’m not offering answers—just documenting the shift.
