At IBM CIO, we have been leveraging every technological shift to our advantage, from mainframes in the 80s to modern technologies like Node.js and Go. However, many of our legacy applications, some of which have been in use for decades, are beginning to show their age and require modernization to remain relevant.

For last decade or so, we have migrated our IT applications from on-premises data centers to cloud. As-is migrations reaped the early benefits like operational cost reduction and scalability. But applications designed and developed on on-premises environments failed to provide business agility, higher availability or better performance. The next phase in the cloud transformation journey is to optimize and operate more efficiently, enabled by a hybrid cloud strategy. Modernizing your applications to be more cloud-native is the key to achieving cost-efficient agility, increasing resiliency and improving developer productivity while fostering innovation.

We will explore Java Modernization, specifically J2EE Modernization, leveraging Automation and Gen-AI capabilities with WCA. This approach has the potential to revolutionize legacy application modernization. From a developer's perspective, this modernization effort will also involve a developer-centric approach, emphasizing code refactoring, optimization, and integration with modern tools and frameworks.
