After we’ve discussed how to talk about race with tact and respect, let’s explore another topic that is just as delicate and important – complexion, or in other words, skin color.
We use the terms "fair" and "light" for very light skin tones and the term "medium" for skin that isn't very light or dark.
The word "olive" describes skin with a slightly green or yellow undertone , often found in people from the Mediterranean, Latin America, and parts of Asia.
We use the terms "honey" and "golden" to describe skin with a warm, medium hue that suggests a golden undertone.
The word "caramel" is used to describe skin with a medium to dark tone, usually richer and deeper than honey.
While some people use the terms "espresso" and "ebony" to highlight the depth and warmth of dark complexions , the standard respectful terms for deeper skin tones are "dark" and "brown."
When describing someone's skin color, keep in mind that context matters. Ask yourself if mentioning skin color is even relevant or necessary.
Remember that words can carry weight. So let’s choose them with care to talk about complexion in a way that honors beauty in every shade .
