Paul Mauriat was a French orchestra leader and composer whose name became synonymous with elegant, melodic orchestral pop. Born on March 4, 1925, in Marseille, France, he showed prodigious musical talent from a young age—starting piano at four and graduating from the Marseille Conservatory by the time he was just 14.
By 17, Mauriat had already formed his first orchestra, performing in clubs and cabarets during the difficult years of World War II. Though classically trained, he was drawn to jazz and popular music, which shaped his signature style: lush arrangements, sweeping strings, and a light, romantic touch.
He gained international fame with his 1968 hit “Love is Blue”, which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks. Over his career, he recorded more than 1,200 arrangements, released dozens of albums, and sold over 60 million records worldwide. His orchestra, Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, became a global brand, especially beloved in Japan and Latin America.
Mauriat retired from conducting in 1998 and passed away in 2006 in Perpignan, France, but his music continues to enchant listeners with its timeless charm.
