Improperly rigging your inflatable fishing kayak for the river will leave you tangled in trees, losing gear and fish, and fully frustrated after your float.
Here's how to turn this piece of plastic into a river fishing machine and turn that frustration into an exciting day of fishing and floating by properly rigging my yak for the river with the Kiss Method.
Keep It Stupid Simple
I'll be the first to admit I love rigging a kayak, and I used to cram as much gear onto it as possible because I might need it while on the water.
Since I'm a bit of a slow learner, it took many cramped and frustrating fishing trips before I decided to lighten my load.
By the time I began testing the Wilderness Systems iAtak 110, I had discovered that simplicity is the best approach while on the river.
So, let's head to the water and walk through my inflatable kayak river fishing setup!
I always have a PFD and wear it 99% of the time; even though I'm a fairly strong swimmer, I'm no match for a strong current.
If you have the option for footrests, use them! I've paddled kayaks without them and was shocked by how uncomfortable I was.
Sometimes, I'll have a cup holder up front to hold my drink or catch my lures as I try to find the one that's working that day.
Maybe I'm just a wimp, but I don't go anywhere without my Kayak Kushion. Even though the seat is pretty comfortable in the iAtak 110, the Kayak Kushion ensures my butt isn't sore after hours of sitting on it.
The spare rod holder is angled backward, not straight up. This helps prevent getting tangled when sliding under overhanging trees, but the rod is still easily accessible.
It's also out of the way of my paddle stroke. In the past, I've rushed to install rod holders and fish finders on other kayaks only to realize it interfered with my paddling. So now I ensure I can paddle and cast without something getting in the way.
I've tried to bring more than two rods, and it usually ends up a mess, so I only bring more rods when I'm kayak fishing a lake and less likely to encounter overhanging trees.
Net in the rod holder of the Railblaza Gear Hub Kayak Crate
On one float trip, I hooked a fish and reached for my net as I reeled it in, only to discover I couldn't get it out of the rod holder because it was angled weirdly.
Luckily, my wife was close, so I handed the pole to her and began trying to free my net. It came free suddenly, and I went splashing into the water as my wife laughed at me.
The moral of the story, which I found out the hard way, is to always have your net handy; don't cram it somewhere that's difficult to reach.
The contents of the kayak crate change depending on what species I'm targeting that day. I typically target bass, catfish, and trout on the river, so I adjust my tackle boxes accordingly.
I bring the most gear for bass fishing, with a few tackle boxes of lures and terminal tackle and a bag crammed full of soft plastics.
I only bring one tackle box and use cut bait when catfishing, as I don't have a way to keep my bait alive and catfishing generally only requires swivels, weights, hooks, and the occasional bobber.
Trout fishing also requires minimal gear, so I bring one tackle box with hooks, lures, bait, and hemostats (the most important tool for trout fishing!)
Depending on how long I plan to fish, I'll pack a small cooler with ice, drinks (lots of water, especially during the summer), snacks, and lunch.
We will often stop on sandbars for snacks, swimming, and lunch breaks while floating down the river, and I'm always thankful for a cool drink, so I toss my insulated water bottle into the yak.
