However, if you see carefully, in the 21st century, countries that are winning, are the ones with the max leverage. The alliances such as NATO, that once formed on the cold-war principle of sentimental alliances between the European Union and the US are slowly giving away to this newly shifting world order.

European Union is facing threats from the US in the Trump administration, India is equally bearing the burnt, France, Denmark, Greenland, are just ones on the same boat. Europe is now openly admitting that it has to cut down on its US dependency and push for more "strategic autonomy". But China has long understood this tectonic shift in global power and hence it has developed itself to adapt to this new strategy long back. While there are also countries such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey that are capitalizing on the aspect of leverage by maintaining a fine balance between multiple super-powers, without committing to none.
