Dhaka Shooting Triggers India–Bangladesh Row As Election Violence Escalates

The attack, carried out by motorcycle-borne gunmen just one day after the election schedule was announced, has intensified fears of political violence ahead of next year’s polls.

The fallout has quickly moved beyond criminal investigation. Bangladesh has summoned India’s High Commissioner, citing “serious concerns” that suspects involved in the shooting may have fled across the border. These claims were fuelled by social media allegations pointing to possible sightings in India, despite Bangladeshi police admitting there is no verified evidence of cross-border movement.

Dhaka has also renewed its demand for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her and Awami League figures based in India of attempting to destabilise the electoral process. New Delhi has categorically rejected these allegations, stressing it has never allowed its territory to be used against Bangladesh’s interests and calling for free, fair and inclusive elections.

As Bangladesh heads toward a crucial vote amid violence, accusations and diplomatic strain, questions are mounting over whether justice is the real priority or if politics is driving a dangerous regional blame game.
