Selling loots from cargo can be lucrative if you have a lot of cargo. Note that this method require enough cargo hold to hold more loots to be sold in order to be lucrative. At least 1k cargo hold is suggested.
You can also enhance your cargo hold with subsystems. Make sure you build your ships in a way that you can also defend yourself from pirates just in case.
Best suggestion would be to create a fleet with other ships that will defend you. One for offense, one for salvaging. You can add more ships if needed be. I usually travel as 2 ships presently.
