Terraria 1.4.5 just added a brand new early-game mount.... and it is a lot of fun!
The blue rollerskates are a pre-boss mount that can be purchased from the travelling merchant for $15 gold, they are also very functional as they 'coast' at the same speed as block placement.
In this video I'll show you how to get rollerskates - given it is the travelling merchant you may not get these until later in the game, when they will not be as 'over-powered', but they are a significant upgrade for a new player.
