The Sony Handycam DCR-DVD650 was released in 2009 and was Sony's final consumer-grade camcorder to record to 8cm DVDs. It superseded the DVD610 and, in spite of being newer, actually removed a number of features which the DVD610 had. The most notable of these was the removal of Nightshot, Sony's infrared night vision.
Presumably, the units had identical video and audio quality between them, at the very least, they're difficult to discern from one another. The DVD650 (like the 610) employs a 1/8 inch CCD image sensor, allowing a total pixel count of 680,000 and an effective 16:9 video resolution of 410,000. The DVD650, unlike the 610, does boast a further zoom lens, bringing the optical zoom up to 60x, from 40x on the 610. As such, the units have slightly differing focal lengths from one another, but as said, it's difficult to discern a real difference.
As the review often points out, the drawback to DVD camcorders is always the format. The 8cm DVD can only record 20 minutes of video in the highest quality mode, which the user will want to use as even that's pushing it (shouldn't be too harsh though, it seems as though many users appreciate the "retro" appearance of the video on these models, can't judge). On top of that, as viewers may have noticed from time to time, the DVD drive would spin up, write, etc. at times during recording, creating an immersion breaking disturbance. That being said, all of these issues may be circumvented via the use of the unit's "Hybrid" recording mode, allowing the user to record to Sony's Memory Sticks instead. Expect a separate test footage video of featuring that option around this time next year.
