From graphite to gouache — this is my full painting process of Gennosuke Murakami, the legendary rhino samurai inspired by Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo.
In this video, I’ll take you through every stage:
Building the drawing with graphite and patience
Capturing wrinkles, armor, and texture through detail
Inking with HIMI gouache for bold precision
Layering washes and color to create depth and storytelling
This piece is both a technical challenge and a heartfelt tribute — to the absurd, the wild, and the wonderfully imaginative world that Sakai built. And to that childlike curiosity we should never lose, no matter how many grays we’ve earned in our crowns.
