There are three main scenarios against a blade. Firstly, the defender gets injured or killed, secondly the attacker gets injured or killed, or thirdly both get injured or killed. This means that in 2/3 of the cases, the defender gets injured or fatally wounded. That roughly gives a maximum of 33,3% chance of survival, one is by definition an "underdog" against a blade. In this training video there are multiple factors which increase the difficulty of this exercise. Dim light on one hand and intense light on the other, depending on where one stands, create the need of taking into account having the light on the defender's back as much as possible. Furthermore the mats are slippery, and the weather is quite cold, around -4C since this is an old open barn, which hinders movement even further. We use a metal training blade which adds an element of realism, yet is not sharp.
The main idea is to experiment and pressure-test our Bujinkan mutodori principles, keeping proper distance and eventually neutralising the attacking limb as fast as possible. Striking is kept to a minimum to avoid unnecessary injuries. One may notice the free use of various taijutsu kamae to counter some of the aforementioned difficulties. Despite the drill happening in a dynamic environment, one may also observe a successful Omote and Ura Kotegyakudori, and parts of Shindenfudo ryu 's Musan and Gyukko ryu 's Renyo kata as a successful control and disarm of the blade.
